Soil Health
Living soil makes living coffee. Compost, cover crops, and minimal chemicals.
Healthy coffee soil is alive — full of microbes, mycorrhizal fungi, and organic matter that feed the coffee plant slowly and steadily. The best growers build soil with compost, cover crops (legumes that fix nitrogen), and minimal synthetic inputs.
Conventional coffee farming often relies on soluble chemical fertilizers that feed the plant directly but degrade the soil over time. After years of this, the same farm needs ever more inputs to produce the same yield.
Look for farms that mention compost, intercropping, or organic certification. Healthy soil produces healthier trees, which produce better coffee — and the difference is often visible in the cup.
