About Origin

Why we started this

1. Educate the whole chain

Growers, roasters, and consumers all benefit when we share what actually drives flavor. Most “coffee knowledge” is hard to access for ordinary drinkers, not because it’s paywalled, but because:

  • Specialty coffee vocabulary is gatekept.Terms like “terroir,” “anaerobic,” “first crack,” “agtron,” and “cupping score” get thrown around without explanation, so newcomers feel stupid and tune out.
  • Knowledge is scattered. What little plain-language info exists lives across roaster blogs, YouTube channels, Reddit threads, and SCA courses. There is no single place a curious drinker can go.
  • Marketing dominates search results. When you Google “best Ethiopian coffee,” the top results are roasters selling you something, not neutral explanations of why Ethiopian coffees taste the way they do.

We want a free, plain-language reference so anyone — drinker, barista, or first-time roaster — can make better decisions.

2. Push for ethical, sustainable growing

Coffee is one of the most chemically-treated crops in the world, and climate change is reshaping where it can grow at all. We publish best practices for growers (shade, soil health, water use, labor conditions) and call out producers who follow them, so consumers can reward good practice with their dollars.

3. Light-roast bias (disclosed)

We believe light roasts preserve the real, terroir-driven differences between origins, and that the industry norm of dark roasting flattens those distinctions into generic “charred” flavor.

This is a personal bias. If reviewers consistently tell us dark roasts deserve the spotlight, we’ll follow the data. We’ll always be transparent about the bias rather than pretending we don’t have one.

4. No pay-for-play

We do not take payments from roasters or growers. Every review is written by users. Reviews are not edited, removed, or boosted for compensation. The Top Rated algorithm is the only thing that determines visibility on the home page.
