Panama

Tiny in volume, huge in reputation. Home of the record-breaking Gesha variety.

Panama produces a tiny fraction of the world's coffee, but its Boquete region — particularly Hacienda La Esmeralda — has become synonymous with the Gesha variety, which routinely breaks auction records at tens of thousands of dollars per pound.

The signature Panamanian profile is intensely floral and tea-like: jasmine, bergamot, tropical fruit, and a delicate, almost translucent body. These are not bold coffees — they're aromatics you lean into.

Most Panamanian coffee is washed, though naturals and anaerobics are increasingly common. If you want to understand what specialty coffee means at the top of the mountain, this is where you start.
