Climate Resilience
Coffee is uniquely vulnerable to climate change. Varietal diversity and altitude are the only hedges.
Coffee is a sensitive crop. Arabica needs specific altitude, temperature, and rainfall to produce high-quality cherries. Climate change is shifting all three — many traditional coffee regions will be too hot or too dry by 2050.
The only real hedges are varietal diversity (planting disease- and heat-resistant varieties like Castillo, Sarchimor, and F1 hybrids) and altitude migration (moving farms higher up mountains).
As a consumer, you can support this transition by trying coffees from less-famous origins (Mexico, Peru, Honduras) and by buying from roasters who work with producers experimenting with resilient varieties.
